The Strange Case of Delfina Potocka

THE BIRTHPLACE OF FRYDERYK CHOPIN AND PARK IN ŻELAZOWA WOLA
Żelazowa Wola 15, 96-503 Sochaczew
The Strange Case of Delfina Potocka
is a 1999 British biographical film directed by Tony Palmer. The production explores the controversy surrounding supposedly unknown letters from Frédéric Chopin to his muse and friend Delfina Potocka, and also addresses the alleged mystery surrounding the composer's death. The film tells the story of a woman who, after World War II, claims to possess previously unpublished intimate letters from Chopin to Delfina. Their contents caused a huge stir, challenging the idealized, romantic image of the composer. These letters are now widely considered a hoax by historians and musicologists. They were forged in the 19th century by writer and collector Paulina Czernicka, which forms the central theme of the mystery explored in the film. The film features lavish sets, exquisite use of Chopin's music, and an unusual, at times controversial narrative. Frédéric Chopin is played by Paul Rhys. Delfina Potocka and Paulina Czernicka (the hoax's author) were portrayed by Penelope Wilton and Valentina Igoshina, among others.

Film in English. No Polish subtitles.
