Reflections on Chopin Over Coffee

THE BIRTHPLACE OF FRYDERYK CHOPIN AND PARK IN ŻELAZOWA WOLA
Żelazowa Wola 15, 96-503 Sochaczew
THE LECTURE WILL BE CONDUCTED IN POLISH

Ignacy Jan Paderewski first arrived in the United States in 1891. It was a time of intense industrialization and urbanization, new financial elites, and a growing middle class for whom culture was becoming an important element of building prestige. It was also a period of flourishing modern press, which shaped opinions and influenced the imagination of millions of readers.

An analysis of reviews and press releases, iconography, and period testimonies allows us to grasp the mechanisms behind Paderewski's image—from a symbol of high art to an icon of mass culture. During the lecture, we will examine how the Old World pianist became a hero of the mass imagination, and his concerts—events that provided artistic thrills but also set social aspirations.
