THE BIRTHPLACE OF FRYDERYK CHOPIN AND PARK IN ŻELAZOWA WOLA
Żelazowa Wola 15, 96-503 Sochaczew
May 9 and 10, 5:00 p.m., "A memorable song. "Song to Remember." 147 min.
Film in English. No Polish subtitles.
This American-produced film portrays the fate of the composer and those around him in a way that departs significantly from reality. The plot tells the story of young Chopin, who cancels a concert because of the presence of a Russian governor in the audience and simultaneously insults him. At the urging of music professor Elsner, he flees to Paris to escape the repression of the occupying forces, where he begins an affair with George Sand. He forgets his homeland. Only the outbreak of the November Uprising awakens his patriotism. He performs a series of concerts for the insurgents, which exhaust his physical strength. He dies alone, with only Konstancja Gładkowska, who has arrived from Poland, and the professor at his bedside.
The plot follows the conventions of a melodrama. The main character's name led the filmmakers to attach great importance to the music in the film. The actor cast as Chopin studied piano for several months, while close-ups show the hands of the keyboard virtuoso Shura. Cherkassky. The composer's works were performed by the Spanish pianist José Iturbi, popular in Hollywood. The memorable song received six Oscar nominations, including Best Color Picture and Best Actor (Cornel Wilde).
